Barry’s mother was back in Hawaii when he was at the start of his senior year in high school. He had some arguments with her about his school life, but barry tried to reassure her and ease her worries. He felt bad after talking to her. it was the one trick she always had up her sleeve, that way she had of making him feel guilty. She said to him, “A health, dose of guilt never hurt anybody. It’s what civilization was built on, guilt. A highly underrated emotion.” Anyway, he graduated without any mishaps was accepted by several respectable schools, and mainly settled on Occidental College in Los Angeles, but he didn’t care about college life. There were enough of him on campus to constitute a tribe at Oxy, and when it came to hanging out many of them chose to function like a tribe, staying close together, traveling in packs. He lived in the dormitory during freshman year and had concerns about the same racial issues he had faced, which he shared with his people. Most of them were tired of thinking about race all the time. They had an agreement to stop bring up racial issues, which would be easier than spending all their time mad or trying to guess whatever it was that white folks were thinking about them. -P.98, August 21, 2021
